Living with one's parents at 40 is not a peculiar affair in our society and it is naturally unavoidable when you're born in the softer sex. For, in Morocco, as long as you don't find a husband, you're treated as young, irresponsible and a potential source of problems. Oh! Really! In a sense, this is not surprising in a society that represses sexuality and associates freedom with debauchery. I have long wondered, like everyone else I suppose, why do men escape these restrictions. I went through a pointless analysis that I eventually abandoned in front of a bowl of Hrira (Moroccan soup) on a day of heavy depression. But that is another matter.
I'm thinking right now about the freedom of living alone. I spent the night imagining the scene when I tell them I will live alone. My mother will look at me with disdain as if I had said yet another foolish mistake. And that would only reinforce the lack of respect she has for me. Because the lack of esteem is almost inseparable from the status of unmarried old girls. “Old girl”: this is a word most certainly invented by a woman, because only a woman knows how to hurt another woman!
It is not even considered a curse but an incompetence, a failure, the inability to attract, seduce, or tempt a man to share his life with you. Even if it is you who refuses the man, you're considered a beast waiting for her master. And you end up being an old fool because nobody wants to adopt old wandering dogs.
An old girl that does not have a job… That caps it all! Yet I have a pretty good background in literature. I don't know, I can write nonsense like that all day long… or type on a computer … or prepare coffee. My unemployment does not help. I am not only homeless, I'm also without income. I'm taken advantage of and do all the housework in the homes of my parents, my uncles, my aunts and my brother. Jamila [my sister] doesn't stop protesting against the general tyranny and against my exploitation. I do not speak.
When I'll tell them I'm going, they will make a fuss about my ingratitude and the shame that I bring to them! “The only reason a ‘girl’ would want to live alone is to fool around”… When they don't have that foolish idea in mind, they think that I'm an unworthy daughter who abandons her old parents after all they have done for her. They will do anything to stifle the idea. I can't tell them until I find where to go. […] I'll find the money to rent some little room somewhere and I'll go. I'm deliberately using the future tense here to keep alive that hope that now constitutes my only way out.
